CHARACTER: CANON SECTION
NAME: Cherche
AGE: Never specified. Probably early to mid twenties?
CANON: Fire Emblem Awakening

CANON HISTORY: Here!

Cherche grew up in the Duchy of Rosanne, a small country on the continent of Valm. When she was young she was training to be a healer, and might have stayed on that path. But because she desired 'adventure,' Cherche ventured into the nearby Wyvern Valley one day. There she came upon a sickly wyvern. She tried to help and got a burn scar on her shoulder for her trouble. The wyvern tried to resist, and got bopped on the head with a heavy staff for it's trouble. Despite this, she and the wyvern became fast friends and Cherche gave her the name Minerva after a legendary hero. Minerva recovered her strength quickly and Cherche discovered a talent for aerial combat.

Her talents were quickly recognized and she eventually became the most trusted vassal of Rosanne's duke. A foppish womanizer, Virion was hardly the ideal lord. Cherche got to know him well enough to know better though. (That is, that he's a foppish womanizer who is far smarter than he looks and has considerable hidden depths.) She probably would've served his household peacefully for most of her life if not for the conqueror.

Walmart Walhart, the great conquering general started bringing country after country under his heel in a grand quest to unite the entire world under his banner. It was only a matter of time before Rosanne fell under his eye. When the attacks came, and it was clear they were doomed to lose, Virion fled the country essentially handing it to the invaders. This was condemned as cowardice by his people, but Cherche knew he did it to spare their people the crushing defeat and many deaths that opposing Walhart's army would cause.

Meanwhile, the Halidom of Ylisse was entering reluctantly into a war with the nearby country of Plegia. Virion had joined their cause secretly, posing as a traveling archer, in hopes of finding trustworthy allies. He fights alongside Prince Chrom and his shepherds until the defeat of the Plegian king and then returns to Valm to see what he can do about his lost lands. For two years, Ylisse was peaceful. But in Valm Walhart's war machine was gearing up again, this time with the intent of crossing the sea and conquering the next continent on his list. He and Cherche warn Chrom of the coming threat and urge him to act. Cherche joins the cause as well and she and Minerva fight bravely. They decide to head out and meet Walmart Walhart's army on it's own turf. They recruit allies from some of the smaller countries that have already fallen under Walhart's rule and seek to regain their independence. Walhart is eventually defeated.

Peace now? No. Early in the conflict with Walhart it was revealed that Chrom's daughter from the future had come back in time to stop a terrible tragedy from ruining the future world. It turns out that Plegia's new rulership is somehow worse than it's last, and is trying to resurrect the Fell dragon, Grima. Everyone's future children had come back in time to stop it from happening. It's through these time travel shenanigans that Cherche got to meet her future son, Gerome. (I'm leaving the identity of Cherche's husband vague, in case of future apps. But if it is necessary for me to pick one of the guys, I have no problem with that.)

Gerome had only come to the past to release Minerva back into the wild. So she wouldn't have to die as the last wyvern. He doesn't believe that their dark fate can be changed. Cherche reminds him that it isn't fate that will be taking innocent lives, but cold steel. This convinces him to join the battle. Even after this, it takes Cherche a considerable amount of effort to get Gerome to warm up to her.

In order to stop Grima from destroying the world, Chrom begins preparing for the awakening, a ritual which will allow him to channel the power of Naga to defeat Grima. (Naga is the good Dragon god that provides the requisite counterpart to Grima) But they need the completed Fire Emblem. Which would have been a lot easier without an avatar of Grima playing weird mind control games with Chrom's tactician, Robin. But because this could take forever and has very little to do with Cherche, here's the short version: Robin turns out to have been born to be a vessel for Grima. This allows the dark god to exercise some control which almost costs them the Emblem. But they get it back and complete it in time to perform the awakening. Huzzah!

But now they have to fight Grima and they learn they have a choice. Either use the power Chrom gained from Naga to put Grima into a deep sleep, or sacrifice Robin's life to kill the Fell Dragon outright. At everyone's urging, Cherche included, Robin is convinced not to make the Sacrifice. After all, it was their bonds that got them all this far. They just had to trust in those bonds to see them through in the future as well. Cherche fought alongside Chrom's army until the very end and together they defeated Grima.

CANON PERSONALITY:

Cherche is introduced to the army as Virion's vassal, and she is very good at her job. She manages his schedule, maintains his gear, and offers him (sometimes scathingly honest) advice, and helps him train. Cherche always speaks politely and eloquently, even when upset or angry, and usually with a smile on her face. Although her bright, disarming smile even when angry can be seen as intimidating. She makes no secret of her disdain for Virion's womanizing and lackadaisical attitude and yet is quick to reassure him that what happened to their homeland was in no way his fault. It is very telling that she stays by his side even though his lands have been lost and his fortune gone. Several people, including Virion himself, have pointed out that she could leave at any time and her only response is that she knows. But her sense of loyalty is strong.

Aside from that, Cherche is also a kind, gentle woman with strong maternal instincts. She frequently offers to cook, clean, and mend clothes for many members of the army. She also appreciates when others help with the chores, embroidering a handkerchief for Stahl to thank him for helping with the laundry. Going out of her way for someone else is never a problem and she readily agrees to help Miriel with her research into human/wyvern communication. And even though Vaike injured himself recklessly provoking Minerva into a fight, Cherche still takes the time to tend his wounds. More than once. Although this act of kindness does come with a stern lecture.

The flipside of this caregiver mentality is her tendency to meddle in other people's problems. Lon'Qu has no wish to discuss his past, but Cherche still pesters him until he allows her to help. And even though Henry expresses a preference for dealing with animals over his fellow humans, she insists on taking him on patrol with her so he can get to know other humans better. And while she is kind, Cherche has no problem scolding her friends or offering them criticism either. When she catches Frederick watching her train, she reminds him that a gentleman would announce himself rather than spy on a lady. And she dashes Ricken's hopes of being a wyvern rider when she reveals that he simply doesn't have a talent for getting along with wyverns.

Despite her delicate appearance, Cherche is extremely brave and takes to the battlefield with everything she has. Even when she was a child in training to be a cleric she was brave enough to enter Wyvern Valley. And not long after, according to her supports with Vaike, she was riding Minerva to school every day. She's willing to spar with Nowi even when the latter is in her dragon form, although she mostly took on that task because Minerva was tired. But although she certainly won't shie away from a fight, she admits to Gaius that she detests fighting. But she takes up arms anyway because there are people she wants to protect and a homeland she hopes to one day restore.

Cherche takes a lot of pride in her fighting ability but is always ready to teach others or learn new techniques herself. As she says when she offers to teach Frederick a secret technique passed down in her family, it may turn out to be to her benefit. After all, they're on the same side, and he may one day use that technique to save her life. But she was equally willing to ask her own son for pointers on aerial battle, admitting that she had much to learn from such a skilled rider. And even outside of battle she's still happy to help her comrades improve. She teaches Donnel a number of domestic skills such as cooking and sewing. As she explains to Gerome, sometimes no matter how strong you are you cannot change fate alone. But with everyone working together and steadily improving their own and each others skills they can accomplish anything.

Cherche also has a very odd sense of aesthetics. She thinks the heavy armor that Kellam wears is adorable. And that it would be even cuter with more spikes. Big pointy ones. Bugs and lizards are cute too. Wyverns especially so. Her own wyvern, Minerva, is very important to Cherche. They've been together since Cherche was only nine years old and she absolutely considers Minerva a part of her family. In her supports with Robin, Cherche even roped him into helping her find Minerva a date. They have a deep understanding of each other and can communicate almost as well as two humans. Most of the army can't tell Minerva's happy scream from her enraged one but Cherche swears there's a world of difference. And it is said Cherche is one of the scariest people in the army to anger because she usually threatens to feed the offender to Minerva, who seems happy to oblige.

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

-Very good with all manner of domestic skills (cooking, sewing, embroidery, etc)
-Trained in wielding staffs, lances, and axes
-Staffs are healing items in Fire Emblem so if she ever got one back she could use it to heal people
-Well versed in aerial combat on the back of a flying animal
-Surprisingly strong and tough(One of the best strength and defense units in the army)

CHARACTER: AU SECTION
AU NAME: Cherche Yata (Maiden name Ryder)
AU AGE: 38
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES: Less well muscled, since in this life she didn't make her living swinging an axe. And without the burn scar on her shoulder that Minerva gave her when they met. Otherwise the same.

AU HISTORY:

-Cherche was born into a middle class family, a good girl who was always getting good grades and was polite to her elders.
-She was very active in girl scouts(or the Recolle equivalent) throughout elementary and middle school.
-Cherche was the girl who always went the extra mile in the fundraisers, planning for the yearly camping trip, etc.
-She was especially popular on the camping trip because she wasn't afraid to deal with any bugs that got into the tent.
-Her grandmother was the one who taught her to cook and Cherche takes a lot of pride in the skills she learned from her.
-Around the time she started high school, she was invited to the city's annual Renaissance Festival by a friend in school.
-She loved it. But less the historical and more the fantasy side of things. Especially things like dragons and trolls and spiky unrealistic armor.
-By the time of the festival next year, she and her friend had made their own costumes.
-They learned to sew at a community center sewing class, but Cherche took to it like a duck to water. Or a wyvern to air, if you like.
-It was also in high school that she met her future husband. He was one year ahead of her. They started dating when she was a sophomore.
-Including a few dates at the renn fest. He was the one who bought her the first tiny gargoyle figure that started her collection.
-Partly because he found her skewed sense of 'cute' to be positively adorable.
-She was especially enamored with his strong convictions. He was the type to stick to his ideals no matter what.
-Married her sweetheart right out of high school, and they started a family right away.
-Has two beautiful sons. (Misaki and Mao both with player permission.)
-She was perfectly happy being a home maker.
-Her husband was a police officer, but strong ideals can be a double edged sword in jobs like that. He was killed 4 years ago in the line of duty. The culprit was never caught
-This left her with the responsibility of providing for her family.
-With her domestic talents being the only marketable skill she had, she got a job teaching home ec at the high school.
-Cherche is one of the nicest and toughest teachers all at the same time. She expects a lot out of her students, but will go very far out of her way to support them.
-She's also extremely active in the PTA and various local projects. (If there such a thing as cub scouts here she used to be a den mother.)
-She also tends to bring trays of cookies or brownies to the police station a few times a week. Something she's been doing ever since her husband started working there.
-Meanwhile her oldest son became a police officer just like his father was and she could not be prouder of her baby. He will always be her baby no matter how old he gets.
-But she still worries. Another reason she peeks in on the police station regularly.
-And she tends to aggressively mother people.
-Even people who aren't her kids.
-While she is an absolute expert with all kinds of domestic tasks, Cherche is bad with technology. Seriously she's one of those moms who asks her kids for help every time she uses facebook. Wait until she gets retrospec.
-She also still has a really weird sense of aesthetics. She thinks bugs and lizards are just adorable and she even collects things with gargoyles on them. Because aren't their smushy little angry faces just so cuuute~?

AU PERSONALITY:
-The major difference here is that Cherche has led a much more peaceful life. No war, no undead hordes, no apocalyptic dragon god.
-Because of this Cherche in Recolle is far less adventurous than she was in canon. She'd be a lot more hesitant about approaching giant lizards or fighting zombies.
-She started getting too busy to attend the yearly renn fest around the time her oldest son started middle school. There were just too many other responsibilities and her husband was busy with work as well.
-She still has an interest in fantasy though, and still collects gargoyles.
-Maybe she'll go back to the next festival. She's been telling herself that for years though.
-She also didn't have a foppish lord or a cantankerous wyvern to look after, or a bunch of fellow soldiers to do cooking and mending for.
-Which means she needed a different outlet for her care giving nature.
-What she does have is two children, whom she adores and will do anything for. She's also taken it upon herself to look after her husband's former colleagues. And more recently her students.
-Basically all her energy is being thrown into caring for others and she's a lot less sensible about caring for herself. She tends to take on a lot of responsibility and is frequently on the edge of burning herself out.
-Partially this is a reaction to the loss of her husband making her feel helpless. Unlike in canon, there's no homeland to retake, no despot to defeat. She doesn't even know the identity of her husband's killer. But her boys were suddenly relying on her and she was determined to do everything she could and more.
